Resently, the pediatric surgery become much advanced due to better understanding of the pediatric physiology and improvement of the perioperative care.
Analyzed pediatric thoracic surgical patients treated at department of Thoracic & Cardiovascular surgery of National Medical Center during the past 20 year form 1950 to 1979.
The following results were obtained.
1. Total number of the pediatric surgical patients were 931 cases. Out of these, noncardiovascular pediatric surgery patients were 563 cases.
2. Sex and age distribution :
Mal : Female = 1.7 : 1
Age range: 12 hours to 15 year-old, average age was 7 year-old.
3. Distribution of diseases.
a. pleuroplumonary diseases : 237 cases.
b. Esophageal disease : 135 cases.
c. Chest trauma : 30 cases.
d. Chest wall : 19 cases.
e. Mediastinal diseases : 17 cases
f. Diaphragmatic diseases : 10 cases
4. Pleuropulmonary diseases.
a. Infectibus diseases (89%), congenital disease, and foreign body in air way were in order.
b. Among infectious diseases, the incidence of non-specific empyema had a tendency of maintaining or a little increasing of numbers, but chronic suppurative lung diseases such as tuberculosis, bronchiectasis and lung abscess has been decreasing.
